Green-coloured polar bears

Green-colored polar bears are drawing questions from puzzled visitors at a Japanese zoo.
Three normally white polar bears at Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in central Japan changed their color in July after swimming in a pond with an overgrowth of algae.
The sight of green polar bears has prompted many questions from visitors concerned about whether the animals are sick or carrying mold, zoo official Masami Kurobe said Sunday.
"Visitors seem to be shocked by the color, and we are asked every day why they are so green," he said.
High temperatures in July and August and less-frequent water changes because of the zoo's conservation efforts caused an algae growth in the bear pond and safety moat, Kurobe said.
Algae that enters hollow spaces in the bears' fur is hard to rinse off, he said.
The bears are expected to return to their natural color when the algae growth subsides in November, Kurobe said.
reach the top easily

Danny Kuo, a designer living in China, has conceptualized shelves for home that appeal to common sense. His “StairCASE” is designed to be a space saver and does so by stacking up shelves. Reaching to the top of the room itself, StairCASE seems to have a lot of area to fulfill our storage needs.A short man is allowed access to its upper shelves via a creative arrangement. StairCASE consists of sliding panels that can turn into a little staircase and allow access to all the stuff stored at the top

A vanishing 7 World Trade Center

This happened 28th august, when the 52 floors of 7 World Trade Center faded into the cloud-flecked blue of a late summer afternoon. Its masonry neighbors (140 West Street and 90 West Street) stood out in contrast. Once in a while, however, when the light and the angles are just right, a skyscraper can come close to vanishing.

World record duck race turns Thames blue

The ducks were released near Hampton Court Palace as part of the Great British Duck Race, raising money for charities including the NSPCC and Water Aid.
Official entrants were an exotic blue, instead of the more traditional yellow, after stewards last year face problems with people throwing their own unofficial plastic birds into the water at the event.
The 250,000 ducks created a world record this year for the most plastic ducks raced together. It beat the record set on the Thames last year, when 165,000 were raced down stream, raising more than $180,200 for charity.
Each duck cost $3.604 to enter in to the race, with the owner of the first past the finishing line at the Sheriff Boat Club at Albany Reach receiving a $18020 first prize.
In 1992, 29,000 rubber ducks fell overboard from a boat in the Pacific Ocean and floated around the world for more than 15 years.

'Loose lion' turns out to be dog

A police operation launched following reports that a lion was loose in north Belfast has been called off after the animal turned out to be a stray dog.
A police helicopter had been used to search the area on Sunday night after officers received a number of reports.
Witnesses had said they had seen a sandy-coloured lion or large non-domestic animal in the Upper Hightown end of Cavehill Park.
Belfast Zoo had earlier confirmed that all of its animals were accounted for.

Sydney's stiletto sprint
A record breaking number of stiletto-clad Sydneysiders have gathered for a sprint race at Circular Quay, with predictably painful results.
Two hundred and sixty-five women, plus a few men, donned heels of at least three inches and made their way to Circular Quay to join in the record attempt. Professional hurdler Brittney McGlone easily outran her competitors, taking home $5,000 Australian dollars (£2,500) and a pair of gold stilettos.

Touch360 Ripple Faucet

This Touch360 Ripple faucet is not just a plumbing fixture, it’s “a new way to interact with water.” It's called Touch360 because water gushes out in a circular fashion, converging at an apex before flowing into your awaiting hands. You control the temperature and flow with a small metal ball, with LEDs lighting its translucent surface, color-coordinated with the temperature of the water.
Spooky Axolute sink

What happened to the drain on this sink from Italian company Axolute? The water either magically disappears, or it slips away via patented “Horizontal Integrated Siphon” technology. You decide. Okay, all you party poopers, if you lean forward and look under the front rim of this sink, you’ll see the slot through which the water flows, sneaking under the basin and into a pipe in the wall. Mount a faucet and its controls into that wall and the spooky illusion is complete.
Axolute offers this stainless steel model, as well as some great-looking white Corian sinks with red, blue or black trim, all using this little plumbing magic trick. Take a look at the gallery below for shots of those, as well as a clever installation in a vanity with shelves below.
