Pope Benedict XVI arrived in Jordan Friday on his first visit as pontiff to an Arab state, kicking off an eight-day Holy Land pilgrimage fraught with religious and political challenges.
The pope received a red carpet welcome from Abdullah II and Queen Rania at Queen Alia Airport's royal pavilion as Jordanian artillery fired a salute in his honour.
He then individually greeted members of the royal family, Christian and Muslim clerics and dignitaries and members of the Jordanian cabinet.
