Milagros Cerrón is one of the world's most unusual babies. She was born with sirenomelia, or mermaid syndrome, a condition in which the legs are fused together. This rare birth disorder affects one in every 70,000-100,000 babies (it occurs with about the same frequency as conjoined twins).
What makes Milagros really special is the fact that she is still alive. Aptly, her name means 'miracles'. She is one of only two known survivors with this condition worldwide - the other is a 16-year-old US girl named Tiffany Yorks. Almost all sirenomelia babies die within days of delivery owing to serious defects in vital organs, particularly in the kidneys, bladder and associated ducts.
Milagros was born to poor parents from an Andean village near Huancayo in Peru.

Born with her legs fused to the ankles and her feet splayed, Milagros looked like one of the mythical mermaids before her operation.
In June 2005 doctors successfully performed risky surgery to separate her legs to above her knees.
The second operation was carried out to separate the remaining fused tissue just below the groin.

Dolphin dies after aerial collision

A 30-year-old dolphin at Sea World has died after colliding with another dolphin while performing aerial tricks, the Orlando, Florida, amusement park said Monday. Hex, the six-legged kitty has been born in Florida
The kitty, named Hex, was born six weeks ago with two extra legs coming from her stomach.
She does not use the extra limbs, instead they trail around her as she walks, although her middle set of legs sometimes get in the way.
But vets say she is likely to die if she does not go under the knife to have the extra limbs removed.
The feline was meant to be one of a twin but half of the other cat fused to her in the womb, leaving her with the extra limbs

Wheels for paralyzed turtle

Little Bit, a young Eastern Box Turtle was hit by a car in September of 2000. Her shell was crushed and she was left partially paralyzed. There was no way she would ever be released to the wild as happens with most successful rehabs. I repaired her shell using velcro strips epoxied to anchor points on her carapace. After some weeks Little Bit seemed to have made a full recovery except for the use of her hind legs. So some wheels seemed to be the way to go. Some lightweight model airplane wheels on a wire frame did the trick. The removable wheels were secured by a velcro strip epoxied to her plastron. The velcro strips on the carapace were removed after four months. She was eating, drinking, and exploring all the rooms of my house. Eventually she was able to move around outside as well. She lived until early in 2002 when she died unexpectedly (and suddenly). After all she had been through I did not have the heart to order any kind of post mortem from the local vet school. I simply said goodbye and thanked her for what she had shared with me and others who met her.

Rafflesia arnoldii: this parasitic plant develops the world's largest bloom that can grow over three feet across. The flower is a fleshy color, with spots that make it look like a teenager's acne-ridden skin. It smells bad and has a hole in the center that holds six or seven quarts of water. The plant has no leaves, stems, or roots.

Dracunculus vulgaris: smells like rotting flesh, and has a burgundy-colored, leaf-like flower that projects a slender, black appendage

Hydnora africana, an unusual flesh-colored, parasitic flower that attacks the nearby roots of shrubby in arid deserts of South Africa. The putrid-smelling blossom attracts herds of carrion beetles.

Around 1,500 students kitted out in waterproof ponchos have created the world’s largest Coke and mentos explosions. The students, from Belgium, tried to out-fizz the previous record for so-called Mentos fountains by simultaneously putting Mentos mints into bottles of the soft drink. (Pook) Cook and Becky Northey are two Australian artists and tree shapers who started their love of tree-shaping with a single chair tree.

One artist has taken put together the idea of tree movement over time with a more immediate kind of art project by equipping a Weeping Willow tree with fifty pens and then watching the results. The natural shape and sway of this tree lends itself to particularly abstract results. As you can see in the lower right photograph above the results may not be high art but the patterns are at least interesting.
