longest remote control

it’s just a concept(length of 20″) much of the remote’s body is covered with buttons numbered 1-99 meaning you would hardly ever need to press a combination of buttons to get your desired channel. also, running out of battery power would never cause a problem as you could probably prod the relevant buttons on the tv set from quite a distance

bizarre musical instrument on earth

the ‘melody road’,a few years ago in japan, members of the hokkaido industrial research institute started carving thousands of very precise grooves into nearby roads. the slightly loopy brainwave belonged to a mr. shinoda, a guy who accidentally cut a road in several places with a digger and then later drove over the damage in his car.
he realised that with some planning and time to kill he could create rows of grooves which, when driven over at a certain speed, would ‘play a tune’.

uphill subway in palestine

it’s called the carmelit, it runs underground in the citry of haifa, and it’s the country’s only subway system. due to the city being located on the side of mount carmel, the entire single track ‘funicular’ system has been designed to accommodate the incline, hence the strange stepped stations and diagonal trains.

pillars in portugal

(2003) extended runway at funchal airport in portugal. the original 1400m runway was notoriously short and, as a result, sometimes dangerous for landing planes
the runway extension won the iabse’s ‘outstanding structures award’ and rightly so: due to an obvious lack of land, engineers have supported the extension on 180 pillars, each 70m high. on the last photo you can see what seems to be a car park that now lives under the end of the runway

His piercing eyes have dumbfounded animal carers who were so worried they tested his vision.
Staff at his Dreamworld home on the Gold Coast found that apart from some reduced pigmentation, Frankie, named after Frank Sinatra, has perfect vision.

Here’s a cool trick from J-Walk. It lets you change the text on any Web page. Just activate the page, clear the address bar, and paste this Javascript code into the address bar:
javascript:document.body.contentEditable='true'; document.designMode='on'; void 0
Hit Enter. Then you can insert text, change text, delete text, and so on. But, obviously, you can't save your changes back to the server. If you have a screen capture utility you can capture your own headlines

Why 15 men sat on a Dead Man’s Chest

The mystery of the pirates’ song, “Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest, yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum,” from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island , has been solved. Until now, its meaning has baffled readers and Stevenson himself never offered any explanation.
The answer is provided by Geographical, published by the Royal Geographical Society, by an explorer who says Dead Mans Chest is part of the British Virgin Islands .
In the early 1700s, says Quentin van Marle , the pirate Edward Teach – known as “ Blackbeard ” – punished a mutinous crew by marooning them on Dead Man’s Chest, an island 250 yards square surrounded by high cliffs and without water or landing places. Each was given a cutlass and a bottle of rum, and Teach’s hope was that they would kill each other. But when he returned at the end of 30 days he found that 15 had survived.
This would explain in full the verse:
Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest
Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!
